New Hampshire leads the nation in numbers of young adults as well as other age cohorts suffering from heroin addiction. Hampton Beach does not escape this epidemic. In early 2016, a new treatment center opened providing young adult treatment near Hampton Beach. Green Mountain Treatment Center serves young adults and their families recovering from the family disease of drugs and alcohol.
It is not the only treatment facility providing young adult treatment near Hampton Beach but it is unique in several areas that are important to the success of recovering young adults. Recovering males and females have separate facilities which allow the young adults to concentrate on their recovery without being distracted by each other. This is just one example of how Green Mountain Treatment attends to details to provide mind/body treatment.
In regards to diet and substance abuse recovery, addiction to substances affects the body in two ways:
- The substance itself affects the body.
- It causes negative lifestyle changes, such as irregular eating and poor diet.
Other ways the body is affected in changes in metabolism (processing energy) organ function, and mental well-being. Proper nutrition may support the healing process.
Each abused substance affects the body differently. We have included two of the major substances currently affecting young adults.
Opiates (including codeine, OxyContin, heroin, and morphine) create disturbances in the gastrointestinal system. Constipation is a very common symptom of substance use. Symptoms that are common during withdrawal include:
This causes a lack of nutrients and can lead to an imbalance of electrolytes (such as sodium, potassium, and chloride).
Eating balanced meals may make these symptoms less severe (however, eating can be difficult, due to nausea). The chef at Green Mountain Treatment works with individuals to provide a diet to alleviate or reduce symptoms. Often, in addition to balancing nutrients, this includes providing extra fiber in the diet. Each young adult is monitored individually and his/her diet adjusted to their particular symptoms.
Alcoholism is one of the major causes of nutritional deficiency in the United States. Wet brain is caused by chemical imbalances due to destruction of necessary chemicals and is directly related to a lack of proper nutrition. Alcohol use also damages two major organs involved in metabolism and nutrition: the liver and the pancreas. The liver handles the removal of toxins from harmful substances. The pancreas is a regulator monitoring blood sugar and the absorption of fat. Imbalance is created due to damage to these two organs and results in an unhealthy balance of fluids, calories, protein, and electrolytes.
Other complications include:
- High blood pressure
- Permanent liver damage (or cirrhosis)
- Severe malnutrition
- Shortened life expectancy
Many young adults enter treatment malnourished physically and mentally. In order to restore the mind body and spirit health of each individual, Green Mountain provides services in the areas which support this health. This includes as discussed above a private chef, and also, meditation groups. Programs and services provided by Green Mountain include inpatient residential treatment, dual-diagnosis and continuing care programs.
